Windsome, established in 1997, is an engineering firm with operational expertise in renewable energy, telecommunications and consumer products production. Its manufacturing operations were divested to focus exclusively on the emerging additive manufacturing space. The Company's focus is on mid-large format additive technologies, targeting defense and aerospace, with a focus on participation in the expansion of the Navy’s industrial base.

Additive manufacturing has its limitations yet viable applications are emerging.  The industry's qualification efforts have been process focused  which now must shift towards production.  To accomplish this cost effectively,  builds require effective and repeatable distortion compensation and defect mitigation to move beyond academia and R&D . Distortion control is evolving from  physical support structures to geometric design  compensation, saving time and expense associated with the iterative "trial and error" method of incrementally refining builds.  Modeling technology has sufficiently matured  yielding 2-3 sample builds vs 10+.  For larger components using  DED processes, cost effective parts qualifications are becoming more viable. ​ Additionally, defect mitigation methods using in situ monitoring and closed loop process control have reached  viability.
